Our Initiatives: A Community-Driven Fight for Environmental and Social Justice
At Lifers Leaving a Legacy (3L), we see environmentalism not as a distant, abstract concept but as a daily struggle for survival in our communities. When we talk about environmental justice, we’re talking about the right to breathe clean air, live without fear of the diseases spread by pollution and waste, and have access to basic human needs like healthy food and safe housing. Our initiatives are deeply rooted in the experiences of those who have been ignored, overburdened, and forgotten people who face the harshest realities of environmental and social injustice.
This is our fight, together. We see you, we stand with you, and we’re working every day to change the systems that have failed us all.
Tackling Airborne Toxins: Breathing Shouldn’t Be Dangerous
The air we breathe is killing us. The fact is that if you live in East Oakland, you’re more likely to develop asthma, heart disease, or cancer because of the pollutants in the air. This isn’t by accident—it’s the direct result of systemic environmental racism. We are conducting a disparity study to highlight the differences in air quality between East Oakland and the Oakland Hills, and we’re fighting for stronger regulations that protect our neighborhoods. No one should have to choose between staying in their community and their health.
Plastic Reduction: Less Waste, More Hope
Our streets are filled with plastic waste—products that pollute our water, our land, and our bodies. The worst part? Communities like ours are targeted with cheap, disposable products, leaving us to deal with the consequences. We are mobilizing through education and action to reduce plastic use in our neighborhoods and take back control of our environment. We’re not just cleaning up—we’re demanding that companies stop dumping their waste on us.
Combating Illegal Cigarette Sales: Health Over Profit
In our community, illegal cigarettes are often sold cheaper than legal ones, making them more accessible and harmful. These "loosies," or single cigarettes, are sold on our streets and impact our health in ways far beyond smoking. The toxic pollutants in these cigarettes worsen the already dangerous air quality in our neighborhoods. On top of that, cigarette butts are carelessly tossed on the ground, contributing to litter and pollution, further damaging our environment.
This isn’t just a public health issue; it’s an environmental one. We are working to raise awareness about the dangers of loose cigarette sales and their effect on our air, our land, and our water. Through education, policy advocacy, and community clean-up efforts, we’re tackling this issue head-on. It’s time to prioritize our community’s health and the environment over the profits of illegal sales. Together, we can reduce these harmful impacts and create a safer, cleaner place for all of us.
At 3L, we understand that environmentalism is about people—about you, your family, your health, and your future. The injustices we face aren’t just environmental; they’re social, economic, and deeply intertwined with the systems that have left us behind. But we’re not waiting for change. We’re creating it. And we need you—whether you’re a community member, an organization, or an ally—to stand with us.
Together, we can build an Oakland that thrives, where every person has the opportunity to live in a safe, healthy, and just environment. Your voice, your actions, and your support will help make this vision a reality.
Food Deserts & Price Gouging: Fighting for Fair Access
When you can’t find a grocery store in your neighborhood and the corner stores overcharge you for basic necessities, it’s more than an inconvenience—it’s a violation of your right to feed your family with dignity. We are confronting the food deserts that make it nearly impossible for East Oakland residents to access fresh, affordable food. Through partnerships with local organizations, we’re working to establish community gardens and secure better resources for our people. You shouldn’t have to drive across town to find a fair price for a loaf of bread.
Fighting Rampant Dumping: Clean Streets, Healthy Homes
Imagine living on a block where the sidewalks are lined with piles of trash, and rats scurry by as children play. This is the reality for too many in East Oakland. Illegal dumping has become more than an eyesore—it’s a public health crisis. We’re fighting back by organizing clean-up efforts, holding local officials accountable, and raising awareness about the real dangers this neglect brings. We deserve better. Every family has the right to live in a safe and clean environment.
